The logistics industry is increasingly being shaped by the convergence of international fulfillment, automation, artificial intelligence and decarbonization. JINGDONG Logistics provides an example of how these capabilities can be integrated across warehousing, transportation, last-mile delivery and environmental management.
In selected overseas markets, JINGDONG Logistics provides local fulfillment, express and last-mile delivery through JoyExpress and JoyLogistics.
In Europe, JoyExpress provides same-day and next-day delivery for Joybuy in major cities across the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France. Its operations are supported by local warehouses and depots, dedicated delivery teams, trucks, vans and electric bicycles.
In Saudi Arabia, JoyExpress provides same-day and next-day doorstep delivery in key cities through local warehousing, sorting and self-operated delivery capabilities. Services include cash on delivery, scheduled delivery and reverse pickups.
JoyLogistics connects local warehousing with order fulfillment and last-mile delivery. In Malaysia and Singapore, it provides integrated delivery and installation services for large home appliances and furniture. Delivery availability and timing vary by country, city and product category.
Automation has become a central component of JINGDONG Logistics’ technology development. The company opened its first highly automated “Asia No. 1” logistics park in Shanghai in 2014. In 2016, it completed its first parcel delivery by drone and launched China’s first autonomous delivery robot. In 2017, it opened what it describes as the world’s first fully automated B2C warehouse in Shanghai.
The focus has since shifted from individual technology demonstrations to scaled deployment. In 2025, JINGDONG Logistics’ self-developed goods-to-person automated warehousing solution was operating in more than 20 warehouses. The system combines high-density storage and automated picking to handle millions of SKUs, increase warehouse capacity and maintain stable fulfillment during major sales peaks.
International deployment followed. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the company opened its first overseas warehouse using this automated solution in the UK. Equipped with hundreds of warehouse robots, the facility increased storage density, accelerated internal goods movement and supported delivery as fast as the same day.
Automation also extends beyond warehouses. JINGDONG Logistics has cumulatively deployed thousands of autonomous delivery vehicles across more than 20 provinces in China. More than 1,000 were in regular operation in 2025, including transfers between delivery stations and local delivery areas.
AI and algorithmic models are applied to inventory management, demand forecasting, route planning and transportation decisions across road, air, rail and multimodal networks. These capabilities can improve inventory visibility, storage utilization, order accuracy, processing capacity and delivery reliability, while reducing costs and supporting more sustainable operations.
Technology development is accompanied by a broader sustainability strategy. JINGDONG Logistics integrates sustainability into warehousing, transportation, packaging, technology and corporate governance through its Green Stream Initiative, launched in 2017. The program focuses on renewable energy, lower-carbon transportation, reusable packaging and digital carbon management.
The company became the first logistics company in China to join the Science Based Targets initiative in 2019. Its updated targets, verified in 2025, include achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.
In 2026, JINGDONG Logistics became the first member from China to join the World Economic Forum’s First Movers Coalition. It pledged that by 2030, at least 30% of newly procured heavy-duty trucks and 100% of medium-duty trucks would be zero-emission vehicles, or that 15% of overall road freight operations would achieve net-zero emissions.
Operational measures are already being implemented. In 2025, the company operated more than 14,000 self-owned new-energy vehicles and increased rooftop solar capacity to 210.44 MW. Reusable cooler boxes were used 89.36 million times, while secondary cartons were recycled and reused more than 300 million times. Greenhouse gas emissions per RMB million of revenue declined 10.67% year over year.
Digital carbon management extends these efforts to customers. By the end of 2025, the platform had activated more than 10,000 corporate carbon accounts and provided services to hundreds of external enterprises. The company’s ESG reporting also covers employee development and safety, emergency response, business ethics, data security, privacy protection and sustainable procurement.
R&D supports the continued expansion of these technologies. JINGDONG Logistics invested RMB4.1 billion in research and development in 2025, up 15.8% year over year. As of December 31, 2025, it had received authorization for more than 5,500 patents and software products, including more than 3,000 related to automation and unmanned technologies.
The case illustrates a broader shift in logistics: intelligent systems, physical automation, local fulfillment and sustainability are increasingly being developed as interconnected capabilities. The resulting logistics model combines warehouses, vehicles, robots, algorithms, energy systems and carbon-management tools into an integrated supply chain network.
